Website Promoter Tips

Patience is a virtue
We understand how difficult it can be to sit and wait, but it can take many months before you achieve desired results. Remember that you are competing with hundreds of millions of other websites on the search engines, and patience will prevail!

One of the worst things you can do is over-submit your website. Left alone, Hawk Enterprises will keep you from doing this. Remember that when you over-submit, you run the risk of being banned from search engines.

Website Content should be your #1 priority!
Hawk Enterprises can help you in many ways, but your quest for high placement must start with a good website. It is important to have a lot of text describing what you do. Use your keywords in the content, but don’t repeat them over and over. Many search engines rate sites based on ‘keyword density’. This is usually a formula that looks at META Keywords, words in your TITLE, words in paragraph text, words in links to other pages, and even words in the ‘ALT’ text on your images. They will even look at different forms of your keywords. For example, if an important keyword for you is ‘FISH’, the word ‘FISHING’ in the body of your document will raise the confidence in the word ‘FISH’ on some engines.

Links to Other Pages
We can’t emphasize enough the importance of links. Both from your page to other pages, and from other pages to yours.

First consider links on your pages. When many search engines see them, they consider your site more ‘real’. It also gives the search engine spiders a place to go. Make your links meaningful. Make sure they relate to what you do (and keywords that are important to you). You can’t have too many links on your pages.

Links from other websites
Some search engines place a very heavy rating of importance on how many other sites in their index have links to your website. Think of it for a second. If you knew that a company was only linked to by one website, versus a company that was linked to by a thousand websites, which one would you consider more important? If you were a search engine, you would surely try to link the more important ones first.

This is where patience comes in again. It can take some time to get a ton of links to your website. Hawk Enterprises helps quite a bit here, however. The fact that Hawk Enterprises submits to so many sites will help you get a great head start in this area!

Don’t use frames
Most search engine simply cannot index a frames page. They get to your site and can’t go anywhere. Consider frames like a big ‘GO AWAY’ sign.

Don’t try to fool the engines
This is probably the biggest trap people fall into. People come up with ways to ‘fool’ search engines, and they work for a little while… sometimes. But then the search engines catch on and write routines that penalize sites that use this practice. Examples of this include, but are not limited to: repeating keywords over and over; using invisible text (white text on white background); using very small text to jam the keywords in a small area.

Keep the most important content near the top of your pages.
Some engines will place a higher rating of importance based on where they find the text in your page. Closer to the top is usually better.

Don’t stuff the top your pages with data the engines can’t read.
As with the last example, something higher up in your page can be more important that something further down. Therefore, HTML formatting, images, scripts, etc. toward the top of your page can result in lower ratings.

Don’t go Image Crazy
We have all seen pages that are almost all images. Usually they are the most beautiful sites. After all, your artist can make beautiful screens that display your content in the most eye-pleasing way. However, the search engines don’t have eyes. They don’t see the beautifully formatted text in your image. All they see is ‘yourimage.jpg’, and ‘yourimage.jpg’ doesn’t go far in terms of content and relevancy.

Look at the competition
Consider everything you have read so far and have a look at the people that have the top 20 positions with the keywords that are important to you. Look at what they are doing and what they are not doing.

Tips and tricks for better Search Engine Positioning!

October 12th, 2009 · No Comments

These are simple “rules of thumb” that make your site look better to the search engines.

  • Create an effective title. Many search engines weigh the data in your title more heavily than other data in your page. Make sure that your title has keywords that represent your site effectively. For the most part the title should be short but always include your keyword(s).

  • Don’t use frames. Most search engines simply can not index a frames page. They get to your site and can’t go anywhere.  Consider frames like a big ’GO AWAY’ sign. If your site does use frames, doorway pages are ideal for better rankings.

  • Don’t try to fool the search engines. This is probably the biggest trap people fall into. People come up with ways to ‘fool’ search engines, and they work for a little while…sometimes.  But then the search engines catch on and write routines that penalize sites that use this practice.  Examples of this include, but are not limited to: repeating keywords over and over; using invisible text (white text on white background); using very small text to jam the keywords in a small area.
  • Keep the important content near the top of your pages. The actual text on your website is very important.  Search engines (spiders) read this to determine rankings.  Some engines will place a higher rating of importance based on where they find the text in your page. Closer to the top is usually better.  But having keywords throughout your page develops a “theme” and that too is important.

  • Don’t stuff the top of your pages with data the engines can’t read. As with the last example, something higher up in your page can be more important that something further down.  Therefore, HTML formatting, images, scripts, etc. toward the top of your page can result in lower ratings.

  • Website Content should be your #1 priority. Your quest for high placement must start with a good website.  It is important to have a lot of text describing what you do.  Use your keywords in the content, but don’t repeat them over and over.  Many search engines rate sites based on ’keyword density’.  This is usually a formula that looks at META Keywords, words in your TITLE, words in paragraph text, words in links to other pages, and even words in the ‘ALT’ text on your images.  They will even look at different forms of your keywords.  For example, if an important keyword for you is ‘FISH’, the word ‘FISHING’ in the body of your document will raise the confidence in the word ‘FISH’ on some engines

  • Keep your site updated. Make sure that your site is up to date. No one likes to go to a page that never changes or that is very out of date. Make sure that the data in your page portrays the message that you want to send.  Check the links on your site every now and again.  Make sure the links are still active.  Dead links are not only an inconvenience for the visitor, but can also negatively influence your rankings.

  • Don’t go image crazy. We have all seen pages that are almost all images. Usually they are the most beautiful sites.  After all, your artist can make beautiful screens that display your content in the most eye-pleasing way. However, the search engines don’t have eyes. • Links to Other Pages. We can’t emphasize enough the importance of links. Both from your page to other pages, and from other pages to yours. We recommend Linkshare as a great resource for name brand advertising links.

  • Consider Banner Ads. These are a very popular method of promoting your Web site. They are the little rectangular graphics that you see near the top or bottom of some popular Web pages. If you click on them, they transport you to another Web site. You can make your own banners

Meta Tags Optimization

October 12th, 2009 · No Comments

Title Your word count should be between 4-15 words with approximately 20-50% of the words being your primary keywords. We usually recommend short titles (4-7 words) that feature the keywords predominately (40-50%).

Description Your word count should be between 10-25 words with approximately 20-30% of the words being your primary keywords. We usually recommend descriptions that are about 15 words with 25-30% being keywords.

Keywords Your word count should be between 5-9 words with approximately 30-60% being your primary keywords. Some people will disagree with this information, if you read the information on the keywords tag in the Meta Tags section of the homepage on the browser tab you will see why we recommend this. In a nut shell, most engines won’t even read the keywords tag and the ones that do don’t place much emphasis on it. Developing long keyword tags reduces your primary keywords relevancy for that page in the engines that read the keywords tag.

Body Your word count should be between 250-850 words with approximately 8-16% being your primary keywords. If you have a smaller web page we recommend the lower percentage (8-10%). Small pages that don’t repeat keywords too often perform rather well in the search engines.

Headers Your header tag should be very similar to your title tag. The best thing to do here is copy your title tag and shorten it if it exceeds 10 words and use that as your header tag.

Link Text This is the hardest area to get a good rating in, and frankly we generally don’t bother. Your link text should be between 10-25 words with 30-60% being your primary keywords. The best thing to do here is use text links that feature your keywords. If you don’t get a good rating, but feature your keywords in the link text you should be alright from a promotional standpoint.

Alt Text Your word count should be between 10-25 words with 30-60% being your primary keywords. Don’t type whole sentences for your alt text. Keep it short and sweet and you should do well.

Below the most important meta tags are listed and how they affect your website are explained.

Title (<Title>): The title tag is the most important meta tag and all too often is not utilized properly. As with the description tag the title tag is what will attract visitors to your website. When web surfers query a search engine the results are based on relevance. When the websites are listed they are usually listed in the following manner: (The title is highlighted with blue)
Your web page title will be displayed here – The description of your website will be displayed here…

Description (<meta): The description tag is the next most important meta tag. As with the title, your description will typically be listed in the search engines. The description is highlighted in red above. Like the title, you will have to tread the fine line between creating an effective description that will attract visitors and rank well in the search engines for your keywords.

Keywords (<meta): Due to abuse by many websites in the past search engines have reduced the importance of the keywords meta tag when ranking a web page for keyword relevance. Many have actually decided to not even consider the keywords tag altogether. While it has reduced in significance it is still an important meta tag to include in your WebPages.

Copyright (<meta): The copyright meta tag, as with the rest of the meta tags to be discussed, are hidden. They are not viewable in the search engine results or your web page. The copyright meta tag is essentially an opportunity for you to enter your company name in the meta tags. Some engines will read this tag, which could result in you ranking higher for your company name in the engines then you would otherwise.
Robots (<meta): The robots tag serves as a set of instruction for the search engines when they visit your website. You can tell the search engines to index all of your web page, only the ones promoted, or none of your WebPages. This is an important tag that should not be excluded.

Rating (<meta): The ratings meta tag will tell the search engines a little more about your website. Whether it is acceptable for all audiences, or for adult audiences only. Some engines will directly look for this meta tag so be sure to include it within your web page.

Distribution (<meta): The distribution tag will tell the search engines if your website is intended for a worldwide audience or not. While most websites are meant to be viewed by everyone, few include this meta tag on their web page.

Search Engine Gimmicks

October 12th, 2009 · No Comments

I have been on the internet since 2000, I have seen a lot of gimmicks on how to get top position in the search engines. Mainly Yahoo and Google.

I have seen and received several emails on I will get your site to the top of the search engines in 24 hours.  Now if you believe this, I suppose you also believe in the Easter Bunny. No offense intended

But these are just gimmicks to get you to put up your hard earned cash.  Yes they will get you in the top 3 positions. But it is a paid link and only last for about as long as you pay them. If you have a large advertising budget then by all means use them. But most people do not have the cash for that type of Advertising campaign.

The best way is for good old fashion hard work and I mean that. To get to the top 3 in the search engines. It takes a lot of patience and time. If you do it right it will take about 3-4 months to get on the first page of the search engines.

I use a search engine submitting software that helps in the automation of the submission. And repeats every month.  Search Engines have a time frame that you can submit some are every 28 to 31 days. If you submit to often during that period you can also be banned from that search engine. Now you can do this by hand each month which can be very time consuming.

There are several other things that go into play before you submit to the search engines. Like Meta tags( title, description, keywords, content) each of these has to be so many characters long. See the section on Meta Tags Optimazition.
